MISCELLANEOUS WALKER FAMILIES FROM FAR AND WIDE. Please be aware these families are not in my direct Walker line. This information is gathered from many sources and even though it did not pertain to my Walker family, I didn't want all this information to go to waste. Hopefully this information will be of use to other Walker researchers. As with any genealogy research there may be some discrepancies and typos. OTHER WALKERS IN NORTH CAROLINA PHILLIP WALKER, Sr. FAMILY My oldest know ancestor was Phillip Walker, Sr. who was born abt 1736 and died in Orange County, NC in 1826 leaving a will naming his children but not his wife who had apparently preceded him in death. My direct ancestor Phillip Walker, Sr. apparently lived in Pennsylvania 12 October 1780 when his son Phillip Jr. was born because Phillip, Jr. reported in the 1850 Census (Henderson, Co. TN) that he was born in PA. The evidence strongly suggests that Phillip Walker, Sr. was the brother of the John Walker, Sr., who married Nancy Ashford. A descendant of John wrote "John and his brother Phillip came to America from Ireland before the Revolutionary War. They settled in Maryland, then on to Pennsylvania and finally to Orange County North Carolina." Phillip, Sr. and John lived in the same general area, along Jordan Creek in Orange County, however after the counties were divided John lived in Caswell County and Phillip, Sr. lived in Alamance County, NC. While in North Carolina, the Phillip Walker family lived in what was Orange County, now Alamance County, on Jordan Creek. The earliest deed record found for Phillip Walker, Sr. in Orange County, NC is 1788, with two additional tracts one purchased in 1795 and the other in 1800, however all three were not proved until 1802. This land was later passed on to sons Alexander and James in Phillip Walker, Sr. will in 1826, with Alexander receiving the largest part, which later at his death passed on to Phillip, Sr.’s other children indicating that Alexander was the oldest son and James being the youngest son. It is also likely that the other children had received their part of their father’s inheritance prior to his death as they only received a token inheritance. Phillip Walker Sr.’s know children are as follows: 1. Alexander Walker (abt 1765-1835) death in Orange County, NC leaving a will naming brothers and brother in law. 2. Counley (Conley, Connally) Walker (28 Oct 1768 -25 Oct 1845) death in Orange County, NC leaving a will naming his wife and children. 3. William Walker (17 Jan 1770 - 19 Sep 1819 death in Orange County, NC, buried in Union Ridge Cemetery, Alamance County, his brother Counley was appointed guardian for his wife and surviving children. 4. Mary Walker (abt 1775 - after 1850) married Samuel Crawford, some of her descendants moved to Fayette County, TN and still live there. 5. John Walker (abt 1776 - death date unknown) but was still living in 1845) at the time of the death of his brother Alexander. 6. Phillip Walker, Jr. (12 Oct 1780 - 9 Apr 1858) died in Henderson County, TN (place of birth named in 1850 census as PA). 7. James Walker (19 Jun 1785 - 19 Jun 1853) died in Alamance County, NC, buried in Union Ridge Cemetery, Alamance County. 8. Jinney Walker (abt 1790-bef 1835) was not married in 1826 and believed to have died before 1835 because she was not named in her brother Alexander’s will. My great-great-grandfather was Phillip Walker, Jr. who married Rebecca King in Orange County in 1816. This was where all their children including my Great-grandfather Ezekiah Walker were born before the family moved to Henderson County TN in the mid 1830’s. My great-grandfather Ezekiah married Cathrine McCall and one of their sons, Grandville Walker, married Isabelle Rushing and were my grandparents and one of their sons, Lucian Walker, married Ida Anderson and were my parents. His success there led to appointments as Rector of Kilmore, and Chancellor of Armagh. He was father of George Walker II, Bishop of 'Derry, who died at Battle of the Boyne 1689. There are many history books describing the Battle of the Boyne and the siege of Londonderry. George Walker II, was born in the early 17th century in the county of Tyrone. He sought refuge in Londonderry during the battle in 1692-3 and was instrumental in bringing the siege to a successful conclusion without surrendering. For his efforts, the House of Commons created the title of "Doctor of Divinity of Oxford" and he was made Bishop of Londonderry by the King. It is said that Bishop Walker's portrait was in every house in England of the time and a lofty pillar was erected in his memory in Londonderry. Great Grandson of George, Bishop of Derry: 1. HISTORY NOTE: In 1793, Henry joined a party UE Loyalists, consisting of 12 families from North Carolina and Maryland. Soon after arriving in the Niagara frontier they established a settlement in the Lynn River Valley. In 1796 Henry applied for and was issued land in Norfolk Co, Ontario. Henry served first with Park's Company as a private, next in the McCracken's Detachment as a private and finally served in the 2nd Norfolk militia. Children are: 2. Joanna Walker b.1800. 2. NOTE: William and his wife, in 1740, made the voyage to Maryland from Ireland. Then, before 1743, (not known when), they moved into that section of North Carolina west of the Chowan River known as Bertie District. There, on March 30, 1743, he presented to the governor's counsel his headright claim, for himself, his wife Ursula, and two other dependents. Jeremiah lived as a child and young man in that peculiar spiritual vacuum which had developed in the Virginia backcountry and in all of North Carolina. Jeremiah became pastor of Nottoway church, Amelia County, Virginia in 1769. This church under his ministry not only had large prosperity, but over twenty churches south of James river were gathered mainly through his labors. Later in life he fell into immorality and adopted erroneous views of doctrine, which cast a blemish on his character and impaired his usefulness. Matilda was the daughter of Leroy Pope and Judith Sale. MARRIAGE: Elbert County, Georgia Marriages 1806 - 1809, Pg. 26: Walker, John Wm. and Matilda Pope, Jan 30, 1810. NOTE: John was educated at Moses Waddel’s Academy in Vienna, South Carolina, the school that John C. Calhoun attended, and graduated from Princeton College. Admitted to the bar at Petersburg, he came to Huntsville, Alabama in 1810. He practiced law with success, interrupted by an election to the legislature of Mississippi Territory. Member of the legislature of Alabama Territory in 1818, and the next year was president of the convention that framed the constitution of the state. In 1819, he was elected the first senator from the State of Alabama. A want of health forced him to resign December 12, 1822, and he died of tuberculosis in 1823, which he contracted while nursing his brother, Memorable. Matilda's father, Leroy Pope, moved the family to Petersburg, GA. about 1794. Leroy Pope and the Walkers went on to found the city of Huntsville, Madison Co., Alabama. Matilda's sister, Maria, married Thomas George Percy, another of the leading families in Alabama at the time. The Popes, Walkers, and Percy families were close socially and in business. After the war he was for a number of years Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, and later president of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. He died childless. 4. Percy Walker b.1812. NOTE: Percy was admitted to the bar after graduation from the University of Pennsylvania. After an initial career in the General Assembly of Alabama, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1855. During the Civil War he served the Confederacy as an adjutant and inspector-general with the rank of colonel. After the war he was appointed Recorder of Mobile. 4. Leroy Pope Walker b.1817 d. He served as 1st Lieutenant of the Third Dragoons during the Mexican War. In the Civil War he was a Captain, 1st Regiment Artillery at Fort Morgan, Mobile Bay, Mobile Co., AL, where he died in 1864. William never married. 4. Richard Wilde Walker b. 16 Feb 1823 AL d,bef.1880 AL m., Mary A. Simpson b.abt.1828 AL. Mary was the daughter of John Simpson and (unknown). NOTE: Was educated at Spring Hill College, the University of Virginia, and graduated with honors at Princeton University. Returned to Alabama to practice law in the early 1840’s. Soon thereafter was elected to the General Assembly and was chosen Speaker of that House in 1855. In 1859 he was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, and later was elected to a full term on the court. In 1861 he was elected a member-at-large to the Provincial Congress of the Confederate States. In 1863 he was elected to succeed C.C. Clay in the Confederate Senate, serving there for the remainder of the war. He retired to the private practice of law after the war and died in Huntsville in the 1870’s. Joseph Walker b.abt.1784 NJ d.1840 Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario m., Abi Lamkin b.abt.1784 d.1851 Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario. Abi was the daughter of Thomas Lamkin and Judith Dickinson. NOTE: Joseph and Abi are buried in Old Woodhouse Methodist church cemetery. During the War of 1812, Joseph served as a private in McFarland Wilson’s Co., Second Regiment of the Norfolk County Militia (1814). Joseph Walker served as a Grand Juror on the London District Court on 1 Jun 1814 and 13 Sep 1814. On 23 Jun 1815, Joseph Walker purchased from William Dickson and Thomas Clark 200 acres of land in Lot 5 in the Gore of Woodhouse Twp. This was located on the west side of present Highway 24 south of the St. John’s Church Road and north of Highway 6. It is about three miles south of the town of Simcoe. Besides farming, Joseph also worked as a blacksmith. Joseph was again a Grand Juror on 12 Sep 1815. On 17 Sep 1816, Joseph Walker, George G. Salmon, Esq., Mr. Rowland Gilbert and Mr. Isaac Gilbert were appointed trustees to build a school in Woodhouse Twp.5. On 10 Jun 1817, Joseph was appointed Constable for Woodhouse Twp. In the 1829 Collection Roll of Woodhouse Twp., Joseph was assessed at £213. On 16 Jun 1826, Joseph Walker purchased from Robert Grant 200 acres in Lot 12, Concession 3, Woodhouse Twp. On 24 Mar 1830, he sold the south half of this lot to Roswell Lampkin. On 5 Apr 1832, Joseph Walker purchased 100 acres in the west half of Lot 12, Concession 4 from John Stone. On 4 Jun 1831, aged 47 transferred to serve as a Sergeant in the 2nd or Reserve Battalion of the 1st Regiment of Norfolk Militia formed for men aged 40 or over. At the time of his death, Joseph was an Elder in the Free Communion Baptist Church. The obituary of Joseph Walker appeared in the Christian Guardian newspaper, Toronto, Vol. XI, No. 42, 12 Aug 1840, p. 167: “Joseph Walker, an elder in the Free Communion Baptist Church, died in Woodhouse June 23, 1840 in his 57th year.” After Joseph died, Abi lived with her daughter Lucy Ann and her husband George Cullimore. In the 1852 Census of Woodhouse Twp., Abi was listed as a widow, born in the United States, 67, Baptist with her daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and George Cullimore. However, this record also stated that there was a female death in 1851 of “palzy” which would have been Abi according to her gravestone. WILL EXCERPTS: The will of Joseph Walker of Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, blacksmith, was dated in 1840, registered on 7 Jan 1850. He left the farm in Lot 5, Gore to his wife Abi. He left the use of his blacksmith shop and tools to his son John. Following Abi’s death, John was to have the south half of Lot 5, Gore. He left the west half of Lot 12, Concession 14, Woodhouse Twp. to his daughter Lucy Ann, wife of George Cullimore. He left the north half of Lot 12, Concession 3, Woodhouse Twp. to his son Isaac. He mentioned his son William who was not yet 21 years old, leaving him 100 acres in the north half of Lot 5, Gore. He also mentioned his other daughters, Amy wife of John Kniffen, Susan Williams and Lovina Bowlby. Thomas arrived in 1771 from Ireland, he selected his land in South Carolina and had it surveyed by 1772 but it wasn't certified till 1773. Thomas settled in South Carolina close to an area called "Ninety Six" on Cuffeetown Creek by other Walkers listed below: 1. John Walker Jr. and Isabel Walker names appear first on the land records, each being granted a bounty in 1767. 2. Francis and James Walker had their land surveyed and filed by 1786. 3. John and William Walker received their land around surveyed and filed 1786. All of the Thomas Walker's land adjoined one or more of the other Walker lands listed above, leading one to believe they were all related. Thomas was a successful farmer till the Revolutionary War. In 1775, the first SC casualties of the war were sustained through a clash of forces at Ninety Six Courthouse between Whig and Tory forces, the Whigs prevailed. There is no records of what if any roll Thomas played during this battle, but it is believed he was with the Tories. In Thomas Walker's claim to the British Commission, he states he "joined the British after Charleston was taken". The pay records confirm he served during the periods of 6-14-1780 to 12-3-1780 and 12-7-1781 to 3-5-1782. Thomas Walker fled alone first heading to New Brunswick, Can. and abandoned his lands in SC after 1782-84. His wife, Mary, and five children traveled by night and rested by day. Before Thomas joined them on the trail one child had died. Another child died on the journey to St. John's. Thomas and Mary had other children after their arrival in New Brunswick. All the children grew up and had homes near their parents in New Brunswick except one who moved to Michigan. The memorial of Col. John Hamilton of the SC Militia, 96th District, 3-22-1784 is quoted: "Shewethy, that the said Thomas Walker hath be personally known to you Memorialists these eight years and upwards, that he always supported an unblemished character and zealously attached to his Majesty and the British Government. That his exertions as a Private in you Memorialists Regiment of Militia were at all times used to promote the good of the service. That in consequence thereof he became obnoxious to those who were disaffected to the British Government. That he was obliged to abandon a good living (well known to you memorialists) and seek refuge within the British lines. His family were in a short time driven from him, deprived of every neccessary except part of their clothing. That you memorialists left the said Thomas Walker and family, the fifth of last at the river St. John in such straiten'd Circumstances as rendered his laying claim in person utterly impossible; Nevertheless, your memorialist hopes there are now here evidence to prove the Justice of said Walker claim." Thomas Walker was first granted a town lot in Parrtotown in 1784. In 1786, he received land in Belleisle Bay, Springfield Parish, Kings Co. Thomas was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church.
